Today is World AIDS Day.
Most of you don’t know that I used to be an HIV/AIDS coordinator and instructor trainer for the American Red Cross. I worked with people in Colorado, Wyoming, and Ohio. I worked with people who were living with their illness and with people who are no longer on this earth. I didn’t know it at the time but this was my first training on working with grief. I am so grateful for this journey.
I often wonder what different conversations we would be having today about gender and sexual identity if we hadn’t lose so many of our elders in the LGBTQ community to this horrible disease. I knew and loved some of these amazing souls and I can tell you we lost a lot and gained some kick ass ancestors.
So many of the conversations we are having today about gender and sexual identity seem very adolescent to me. So many of all conversation seem very adolescent to me. We seem to be moving more and more towards othering each other instead of expanding our definitions around who we are together.
